Once again this year, GERS will be funding underrepresented students to attend our yearly meeting through the Mentors in Marine and Estuarine Sciences program (formerly known as the Institutional Liaisons Program). Through the year, the MIMES committee solicits donations from companies and groups, funding the program entirely outside the GERS yearly budget. The recruiting of students for the program is done in two ways. First, we contact the biology departments of colleges and universities with high levels of minority enrollment, including historically Black and Hispanic institutions. Second, and a much more effective method, we rely on GERS members to identify potential MIMES participants from their classes and departments. Students eligible for the MIMES are advanced undergraduates or beginning graduate students who belong to an ethnic minority group, are female, attend a majority minority institution, or come from a disadvantaged background. Please take this opportunity to help us identify students who could benefit from the support and exposure provided by MIMES. If you have suggestions, such as the name of a potential donor, please feel free to contact any committee member. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. This year's committee members are Dan Childers (FL), Tina Miller-Way (AL), Cindy Moncrieff (MS), and myself. |
