| Students Welcome fellow students! The Gulf Estuarine Research Society is committed to increasing student participation and opportunities. The society provides a formal yet relaxed venue in which we can present our research and receive feedback from experts in the field. GERS wants and welcomes our fresh ideas and perspectives and needs more of us to become active members now. So, help us build a bonafide student GERS community by joining GERS today! Please contact your interim GERS Student Representative, Suraida Nañez-James at gulf_estuarine_society@hotmail.com , if you have any questions, comments or suggestions. Student Awards Monetary awards ranging from $100 - $500 (dependent on availability of funds) are awarded on a competitive basis to the best student presentations at GERS conferences and other designated meetings. These monies are to be used to defer travel expenses to either GERS or CERF meetings. Travel reimbursements for the designated award amount are rendered upon receiving expense receipts. Revival of the Mentors in Marine and Estuarine Science (MIMES) Program The MIMES program will provide travel awards to upper-level undergraduate and graduate students from underrepresented minority groups who are currently enrolled in a college or university in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. Each student will be paired with both a regular and student GERS member, who serve as meeting mentors. The idea is that these students, selected for their interest in coastal and estuarine science and high quality research, will have the opportunity to travel to the GERS regional meeting, network with scientists, and participate in all functions via one-on-one mentoring. It is our hope that this program will help encourage minority participation at our meetings as well as increase the number of minority students in graduate programs across the |
