| Membership Why Join GERS? For a mere $20.00 (all members) per calendar year, you will receive a full membership to GERS. Your membership and involvement in this society is important to the conveyance of ideas and answers to the many coastal and estuarine issues facing our Gulf Coast. During difficult times, joining professional societies such as GERS and CERF is a good investment. Societies provide a means of networking with colleagues about jobs and other positions, new funding opportunities, long-term planning, or just coping with whatever the immediate future has to offer. With changing resources, networking is vital because opportunities often have a short response time. One of our most visible functions is GERS meetings. These meetings feature oral and poster presentations on Gulf of Mexico research, social events, a banquet, and often field trips. Our primary emphasis is keeping the meetings formal but relaxed, thus, providing an excellent environment to present your work and meet other scientists who are working in similar fields. We also provide information and support to encourage other regional Gulf meetings such as the Mississippi Bays and Bayous Meeting, the Louisiana Basics of the Basin Meeting, the Graduate Student Symposium, and the Texas Bays and Estuaries meeting. GERS also recognizes that undergraduate and graduate students are the future of our profession. We support and encourage student participation by providing several monetary travel stipends to deserving students who want to attend our GERS meetings and present their research. We also help fund travel to the biennial CERF meeting, as well as other regional Gulf estuarine and coasts meetings through student presentation awards. There are three categories of membership: Regular: Individuals whose professional activities are consistent with the mission and goals of GERS. Student: Individuals whose professional activities are consistent with the mission and goals of GERS and who are currently enrolled in a college or university. Honorary: Individuals whose outstanding contributions in estuarine and coastal research have been recognized by the Executive Committee and GERS members. Honorary members are elected for life and do not pay dues. |
